Iberian lynx, Spain

Tour details

The Iberian lynx, which occurs on the Iberian Peninsula, is one of the most endangered cat species in the world. Its distribution range is disappearing mainly due to the destruction of suitable habitats, which are being occupied by crops and buildings. The population size of the Iberian lynx is also largely dependent on the population of the most important prey of this predator – the rabbit. Thanks to an active protection project conducted for over 20 years, the lynx population has survived and is systematically rebuilding. Its current number is around 2,000 individuals.

 

During the tour, we will observe and photograph lynxes coming to natural water holes, surrounded by dry, semi-desert areas. June is the best month to watch pups, which were born only a few months earlier! 

 

The water holes will also be frequented by winged inhabitants of the area, such as the red-footed partridge, turtle dove, collared dove, sandgrouse, blue jay, various species of passerines and rabbits.

For the photo sessions we will use permanent hides, which also allow for low-angle photography.
